Ocean Activities

ocean activitiesThe Big Island is home to some of the best ocean activities available anywhere in the world. Ask anyone who has moved here why they came and they’ll tell you they took one look at how blue the ocean was, and couldn’t leave. As the Big Island is the youngest of the Hawaiian Islands, it has very few rivers and streams (on the western/Kona side) that enter directly into the ocean. That combined with the fact that it’s simply a pile of rocks in the middle of the Pacific, gives us some of the very clearest water anywhere in the world. Anytime the sun shines, the water turns incredible shades of blue.

The Big Island is one of the only places in the world where you can be in deep ocean water within two miles of the coast line. As a result, you don’t have to travel far to be in waters hosting all of the creatures of the deep ocean sea.

Whale Watching:

Humpback whale season starts in mid to late December and lasts until mid-March. During

this part of the year, it’s easy to see whales breaching from the shoreline. It’s particularly exciting to see the young calves who get very active in February and early March. Many boats will take you out just a few hundred yards from the shore where you can experience these beautiful creatures up close and personal. It’s Illegal to intentionally come within 100 yards of a Humpback but they often come near the boats out of curiosity. If you like, you can combine this with a diving or snorkeling excursion.
Other whales are present year round. Tell your boat captain you would like to snorkel with the Pilot whales…. It’s amazing!
